Artist Interview
This is the edited final artist interview, I was inspired by other Indie music interviews and decided to go with an introductory style interview where the artist doesn't really address the music they make of in the process of doing, instead they focus on their general lifestyle and how the difference from normal life and new gained fame is now affecting them.
Stand first:
Many will have already imagined for the next major artist of indie music, stepping forth from the crowded streets of our own colourful England. With past artists such as Clean Bandit, Lorde and Coldplay to follow in the footsteps of, there definitely is a high standard to be reached.
Yet who could ever have thought that this new colour of indie music, be literally painted in the wind, and born on our own Brighton shores.
New and upcoming artist, Devi Lotus, is turning heads quickly with her first debut album, “Colours of the Wind”.
Halle Johnson interviews this newest colour of the wheel to see exactly where the love for indie music started.
Interview:
So Devi, this is one of your first interviews with a name for yourself isn't it?
Yeah, and it’s amazing! I mean, I was never one to be watching all these music interviews, i was always the sort of person that just liked someones music, I didn’t really need to know where it came from or who it was made for. I just liked it cause it sounded right. Now knowing that I’m actually one of the people who have to do these sort of things, every time I make a bleeding song, I kinda understand why it’s so important that artist tell their fans what the meanings of their songs are. After all, " What's life if it can't be expressed!"
Great to hear! seems that your taking to the spotlight nicely.
Speaking of which, how are you enjoying it?
The spotlight, you mean, oh wow, it definitely is something else. i mean, coming from a place like Brighton with a big family, even your own breaving space is hard to come by, but when I started to noticed, especially by those who followed me on my social medias, it felt really overwhelming to start and even got me kinda paranoid; I just wouldn’t know where they would pop up next.
I think it was only when I went up to a family reunion though, did I realise how nice and special it feels to have all these amazing people that you know nothing about, but they know so much about you, want to come up and hip and shake and even cry with joy at seeing you. It’s honestly the single most greatest feeling I’ve ever experienced.
It sounds like your very grateful to your fans, and not only that, you really like surprising them too, don’t you?
Yes!
There was this one girl back when I was doing a small show couple months back, and she just looked so unamused the whole show and I thought she must of just been dragged by a younger sister or something. So as I was walking through the crowds, I saw she was holding something up to her face and when I got closer, I saw that her whole right cheek was swollen. Turns out, on that same day, she had both her wisdom teeth taken out, yet still wanted to come to my concert, I found it unbelievable! When she told me, I just took her to the nearest ice cream store and got the us both four different flavours. I just had to.
That's incredible! It’s amazing how devoted you are to your fans. Were you ever a devoted fan?
I never really had a ‘serious’ following to anyone while growing up, to tell the truth, music wasn’t really my thing the I was younger. Though as I grew up, and especially through my late teens, my discovery of Lorde made my whole world switched.
I didn’t even really notice her music at first. I was her personality, her stance, the way she was so independent and didn’t care about what she said. She was and still is my biggest role model. I suppose I have her to thank for getting me properly introduced to Indie Music.
I see, so the meeting with the musicians of your life-long influences, the Gorillaz, never had anything to do with you wanting to turn to music?
Well, the Gorillaz are an exception in any book. My eldest brother had a lot of their albums, and so when he used to bike ride with his friends, me and my other sister used to sneak into his room and listen to them and try and rap along with them. Our childhood was awesome. It must of been the fact that they were also a cartoon band was what made them so interesting for kids like me, anything colourful and I was there. Hence, the album title.
So thats the origin of it. There were quite a few rumours that it may have come from your resent jam session with the one and only Coldplay?
Well, it wouldn’t be lying to say that it was a starting inspiration. Chris is just the most sweetest guy, and especially since he so busy all the time now, it was great to even just be able to sit with him for a few moments. The whole "actually making something productive" out of those hours was totally last minute, though, of course, I’m beyond glad we did. I honestly couldn’t think of a better way to finish off my time in London and have those memories there too.
