Research Rationale.

So now after being introduced to our task project, we now have to chose a genre of music to help further our research and develop our own ideas of how we would like to present our cover, contents and double page spread.

I’ve personally chosen to base my magazine in the genre of indie-rock music; specifically alternative indie music, as it is where I have a large, and wide range, of knowledge in already. By picking this genre, I feel much more comfortable making stronger decisions for my magazine, and find it easier to conform or reject the stereotypes within my genre so that I can make my magazine really unique.

Since my target market tends to consist of people in their late teens onwards, and as I’m now seventeen, in a sixth form, I’ll find it much easier to be able to collect information from my peers about their favourite artists and the styles they normally associate with the indie genre. I believe it would also be helpful to also ask them about the styles and techniques that they would want or wish to see in the indie genre as a further research and development strategy to use later.

By using different types of research techniques I believe this helps to uncover a wider range of perspectives. Using qualitative and quantitive research allows me to better understand what my target market wants from their magazine and why. 

This is because qualitative research focuses on the person other than the whole market; qualitative helps gather more in-depth answers that can inspire different perspectives on how we look at magazines, therefore influencing the production of making our magazine.

Quantitative research focuses more on the facts and statistics of my chosen genre, and how the audience as a whole is influenced by my a genre of music, which would also effect my decisions on how I present my magazine. 

By also using practical research from group discussion and observations, this helps me to see what looks my audience would go for before they even know whats inside the magazine. The colours, style and size of both images and texts are all contributing factors that I’ll have to consider for own magazine so that the magazine in turn, would convey the right message to my audience.

I believe that by doing all this research, it will help to give me a much deeper meaning to both my artist; their style and their decisions behind going into the indie music industry, and also the way I’ll make my final pages.
